In celebration of National Reconciliation Week (NRW), Positive Partnerships would like to share two of our dedicated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander resources. The newly updated animated short films, Finding out about Kevin and Understanding Kevin. These two films seek to increase knowledge of autism within the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

The two short films were developed initially alongside an Aboriginal community in Northern NSW and provide a culturally relevant and safe space for families to increase their understanding of autism. Both films depict a strong Aboriginal family advocating for their child and learning about autism.

Current data shows that autism is underdiagnosed amongst Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Researchers need to understand the significance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture regarding autism and the diagnosis journey.

Both animations tell a story of an Aboriginal family learning about autism through their boy Kevin. The stories follow the family through diagnosis, understanding autism and working with Kevin’s school and teacher to provide a safe environment for Kevin to fulfil his potential as an Aboriginal boy on the autism spectrum.
